Growing Words Through Play: 5 Simple Ways to Build Your Child’s Vocabulary at Home

At JOYcabulary, we believe something simple but powerful: words grow best when they are experienced, not memorized. Children don’t learn vocabulary by copying definitions. They learn through curiosity, play, and meaningful moments with the people around them.

Here are 5 easy, joyful ways to help your child grow their vocabulary every day.

When words feel like play, kids are curious. The goal is laughter and exposure.

  • Mystery Word: Give clues and have your child guess the word

  • Would You Rather?: Use interesting words in silly choices

  • Lights, Camera, Action!: Act out words like stomp, tiptoe, or slither
